Oceanography

Playa del Rey offers 6th grade students unique opportunities to learn, discover, and participate in the world around them.  Part of the 6th grade experience that students can immerse themselves in and enjoy is the exciting area of oceanography. Beginning in November and continuing through February, students each week gather to learn about our world’s oceans, discuss issues, and create exciting and informative projects.  Those students (up to 40) are then invited on a two-day field trip (teacher chaperones only) to San Diego and Long Beach, California upon completion of all Club assignments and activities. The Club, which is voluntary, is available to all students who make a commitment to attend the meetings, complete all assignments, and demonstrate character and integrity every day.

In addition to the weekly club activities, the students on the field trip enjoy motor coach transportation, a floating boat lab experience in San Diego Bay, admission to SeaWorld or the San Diego Zoo, hotel accommodations, and entry to the Long Beach Aquarium.

In early February Project Exploration, the organization which coordinates our California field trip, holds a parent meeting explaining the itinerary, guidelines, and other useful information for parents and our students going on the trip.

Payment options include cash, check, or tax credit.  Please call the school office at 480-892-7810 to learn more about the tax credit option. Information including the cost of the trip is sent home via flyer in early August so parents have time to plan or budget for it.

Please consider having your child join the Oceanography Club as part of their 6th grade experience here at Playa.
